ModalAI® Launches Stinger Vision FPV Drone for Indoor Reconnaissance and Development

New NDAA-compliant FPV drone built with Blue UAS Framework components reduces training burden and accelerates FPV development

San Diego, CA — May 20, 2025ModalAI, a leader in autonomous drone and robotics technology, today announces the launch of its newest innovation: the Stinger Vision FPV, a compact, ready-to-fly first-person-view (FPV) drone designed for safe, autonomous flight in confined environments. Onboard the Stinger Vision is ModalAI’s new MVX system, designed for long-range, low-latency video streaming. Optimized for government users and developers, the Stinger Vision brings AI-enabled performance to reconnaissance missions.

Built on the Blue UAS Framework and based on the Blue UAS-Cleared Seeker Vision FPV architecture, the Stinger Vision is NDAA-compliant and powered by VOXL 2 Mini, ModalAI’s smartest and most compact autonomous computing platform. The result is a 575g drone capable of navigating GPS-denied environments with minimal pilot input, using AI-assisted vision systems for autonomous flight.

“Stinger Vision FPV is our answer to the growing demand for smaller, smarter, and safer FPV drones,” said Chad Sweet, CEO of ModalAI. “Our team engineered Stinger Vision to dramatically reduce training time while delivering advanced autonomy and long-range video streaming in a rugged, ultra-compact package.”

Fly On Easy Mode with Onboard Intelligence that Reduces Training Burden

Stinger Vision FPV empowers users of all levels by combining intuitive controls with its autonomy-first design. Onboard sensors include dual computer vision cameras, a low-light EO sensor, and a downward thermal camera for night-time positioning. ModalAI’s U.S.-built MVX video system delivers long-range, low-latency streaming with dual-band digital HD and 256-bit encryption.

Operators can switch between EO, downward, and optional Boson®+ 640 thermal FPV views, offering enhanced situational awareness when navigating confined spaces like warehouses and tunnels. If video signal is lost, “backtrack” mode allows the drone to autonomously retrace its flight path until the connection is restored.

More Than a Drone: A Development Platform for the Future

Beyond providing operators with indoor and outdoor inspection capabilities, the Stinger Vision FPV serves as an open development platform for OEMs and engineers seeking a high-performance FPV reference drone. Powered by the VOXL 2 Mini, it offers a full suite of onboard compute from the Qualcomm QRB5165 processor, PX4 flight control, and visual inertial odometry (VIO). Developers can leverage Stinger Vision FPV as a reference drone and ModalAI’s open VOXL SDK to prototype new sensors, add custom software, and expand into new mission profiles with ease.

“Whether you're building next-gen drone capabilities or need an NDAA-compliant FPV solution today, Stinger Vision offers a scalable, modular foundation,” said Sweet.

Key Features:

  • VOXL 2 Mini with Qualcomm QRB5165 chipset (8-core CPU, 8GB RAM)

  • Autonomous flight in GPS-denied environments with Multi-Cam VIO

  • Backtrack mode for autonomous signal-loss recovery
